Historical Background of CBSS.

In 1962, Prof. Gaustard and Prof. Hans Haubolt offered the teaching of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Nigeria.

Basic Space Science in Nigeria began with Astronomy Observatory studies in Nigeria.

The first Nigerian Astronomer that carried over this vision and founded a carrying out Postgraduate Research in Astronomy and Cosmology.

Space Research Centre Project (1978-89) in Nsukka, Nigeria, at the University of Nigeria in 1962 by Prof. S.E. Okoye.

In 1991, the concept was catalyzed by the United Nations Workshops in Basic Space Science, followed by a paper exposition by Professor P.N. Okeke FAS in a public lecture arranged by the Nigerian Academy of Science, Lagos, in 1999.

Establishment of CBSS

In 2001 The Center for Basic Space Science (CBSS) was founded as one of the activity centers of NASRDA.

It locates at the University of the Nsukka.

They formally created an outstation of CBSS, NASRDA-Center for Atmospheric Research (CAR) Ayingba.

The Centre for Basic Space Science is tasked with carrying out scientific observations of the Moon; To calculate and forecast the appearance of the first astronomical lunar crescent for each month of the year.

On the 27th of August 2010, the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, the formal President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCFR), signed into law the National Space Research and Development Agency Act of 2010
