Lagos State Government’s New Traffic Law

The Lagos State Government’s new traffic law made it mandatory for every vehicle owner to get a computerized vehicle inspection on their cars

Many years after the Service came into existence, it was issuing roadworthiness certificates to car owners who paid the required fee without inspecting the car in question to certify its state.

But the Road Traffic Law 2021, made it mandatory for every vehicle owner in Lagos to bring the car seeking roadworthiness certificates for physical inspection at any of the designated centers.

The car owner is only required to renew the roadworthiness payment, with no additional charges. After completing the payment, the car owner will receive a referral note, which they can present at the inspection center.

The referral notes contained details such as a booked appointment, transaction date, inspection date, and the assigned center.

The existing law of the State prescribes a standard that such mobility must meet to move around, otherwise, it is a threat to traffic flow, life, and environmental safety. To this end, the VIS, before certification, by existing law requires the efficiency of the necessary components of vehicles which include good tires, functional braking system, horns, light, indicators, windscreens, side mirrors, steering mechanism, functional wipers, emission system into a state of automobiles’ body to guarantee the safety of lives and eschew needless breakdown that often lead to traffic gridlock on the highway.
