“We didn’t want to sign Sterling,” said Edu, head of transfers at Arsenal, on transfer deadline day

According to Arsenal director of football Edu Gasper, the club had no intention of signing Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling.

The Gunners loaned Sterling out on Friday night, the deadline day.

Edu stated following the deal’s confirmation that they seized a market opportunity with the 29-year-old.

“To be honest, we weren’t planning on signing him when the transfer window started. There are a lot of reasons behind that, but we always tell people to be ready for anything,” he explained.

Naturally, I spoke to Mikel Arteta and reviewed the team when the chance presented itself. I checked with our vice-chairman, Tim Lewis, to make sure everyone is on board with the next move.

I think he will be a huge asset to the team, therefore it’s smart to have someone with his skillset on board.

Before Saturday’s early kickoff against Brighton, Arsenal will likely introduce Sterling to the Emirates crowd.
