The first Nigerian to command a US Navy warship is Kelechi Ndukwe

As the first Nigerian to ever command a US Navy battleship, Kelechi Ndukwe has cemented his place in history.

The United States Navy elevated Kelechi to the position of commander on Thursday, August 29, 2024.

A US Army officer named Victor Agunbiade praised Ndukwe on his accomplishment and shared the news on his official X.

“Friends and admirers, allow me to introduce you to Captain Kelechi Ndukwe, the newest member of the United States Navy,” Ogunbiade posted with photos from the promotion ceremony. Captain of a US Navy warship—the first Nigerian to hold that position! Your promotion is greatly appreciated, Captain. Deservedly so.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, praised Ndukwe in response to the news report on X.

“On behalf of the United States Navy, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to Commander Kelechi R. Ndukwe on his promotion to the rank of Captain.”
